Hey Guys! My name is Kirky Olsen. I am originally from a small town in Michigan called Middleville right outside of Grand Rapids. I am an Exercise and Sports Science and Outdoor Leadership and Recreation double major. I am definitely an addict to Rock Climbing, as I have been climbing since i was 7. Anywhere outside is where I love to be. Which, is why I chose Western because of all the possibilities it offers. I love being able to see the mountains all around campus every day! Western offers a lot of programs to be not only involved, but to actually be a part of this place. Gunnison, has many local climbing areas that make it possible to take day, or just afternoon trips climbing. Some people might come to Western, and think that since its such a small community, and town, that there is "nothing to do". I would like to tell all incoming freshman, and transfer students to take all opportunities to get out and see what Gunnison and Western is all about. And if you want to find cool new places to camp, hike, or climb, don't be afraid to ask!

Skiing Progress!!

This Weekend was skiing weekend number 3 and it’s finally clicking! I went down Keystone a couple of times. I fell a few times, but not too hard! :D Keystone is pretty steep and I was super nervous, but I did it! Yay!!! I’m so excited to go to Deer Valley, only a few more weeks until spring break! Let it snow!!

Back on the Board

This weekend I was fortunate enough to take a break from learning how to ski! So, I hopped back on my board and had a fantastic few days up at Crested Butte! My Boyfriend had his brother and a few friends in town from San Fransisco so we took them over to the peel! This was the first time I got to jump on it this season so I was equally as excited! Not to say that I didn’t eat it a couple of times, but thats all part of the fun! :) The second day, my sister came into town from Michigan. So, she came up to the mountain too! This was only her second time boarding ever!! So, I showed her around for a few more runs and then the day was over. It’s always a bummer when the close the lifts right in front of you. Anyways, I hope all of you got to ride in the new snow! Happy Presidents Day!

Day 1: Skiing

WHEW! From what I know now about skiing, and what I thought about it before, I was so wrong! I thought it would be relatively easy, no way! Having a ski on each foot is a crazy concept! I started out on Peach Tree, I think. I was so nervous!! My boyfriend Ryan was my coach, and thank goodness for his patience! The hardest thing for me, was keeping the skis uncrossed! The tips of the skis would always get crossed, and I would get stuck, or just not stop! It was so funny! I was definitely frustrated here and there, but ill be right back up there next weekend! Props to all you Skiers!
Wish Me Luck!

Skiing and Deer Valley

Hey y’all!
So, for Spring break, I am going to Deer Valley in Park City, UT with my boyfriend and his family. BUT i had no idea that there is NO snowboarding there!! I had no idea that there was even such a place. I am of course a snowboarder, so this posed a huge problem. I personally think that its kind of ridiculous that you can’t board there, but thats just the rules I guess. So, I am learning to ski! whew, this should be interesting! Those little 3 year olds up at CB are going to be zooming by me. If anyone sees a small blonde girl falling all over the place on skis, thats me! :P I only have until spring break to learn how to ski, so wish me luck! And if you have any tips, I could use them!!!
let it snow!

Crested Butte!

Fortunately for all of us East coast or Midwesterners, we have Crested Butte! I come from Michigan, where our “mountains” are actually old land fills that have built up to “mountain heights”. It’s actually kind of gross if you think about skiing on old trash, but thats all we had. Anyways, last season was my first season snowboarding ever, and luckily I picked it up quite fast! I have Crested Butte and some very patient friends to thank for that! If you haven’t been up there yet, they just opened up another lift today so, there is actually a lot to ski or snowboard already. Not to sound like a stupid ad or anything, but there really is a lot for everyone up there even if you’re new at it! There is also a really handy RTA system that runs back and forth from gunny to CB to the mountain, so you don’t have to worry about hitching a ride if you’re not keen on that! Happy Winter!

Ohio City

This weekend, Ryan (my boyfriend), my two dogs and I went hiking in Ohio City. Ohio City is really close by and easy to navigate. If you don’t have a map you can probably borrow one from WP or from the REC department, they are very supportive. We hiked up near Terrible Mountain and encountered about 20 hunters. LUCKILY we had checked the hunting season schedule and put orange on our dogs! It ended up being a short day, but an awesome hike!
